perforce test connection failing even when all other perforce actions work

Created: 16 Jan 07 22:13   Updated: 26 Feb 07 20:19
Component/s: Version Control Integration. Perforce

Environment: Windows xp, sp 2, 3 gbs ram, fast proc, hyperthreaded.

Build: 6,148
Severity: Medium

 Description  « Hide
After manually setting my perforce settings, I hit test connection. I get a host not found failure, check $P4PORT. TCP connect ot perforce failed, perforce: host unknown. However, I can still update the project, see history, etc, it's clearly connected to p4. Pinging the host works, and p4win works (and picks up changes I've done in intellij.)

So, for some reason, the test connection button is bombing out, even when the host is reachable. More of an annoyance, really.

I've unchecked Use P4CONFIG or default, and entered my info manually.
Use login auth is checked
Use native perforce api is checked, and the path to the executable is correct.
Server timeout is 20 seconds.

we have few known problems with this TestConnection button, so i need more details, if possible, to understand whether you one is a new one:
are all the settings (port, client, user, password) set and correct?
does the problem occurs after dialog reopening?
does the client you use in idea is the default one or not?
could you please send the dialog screenshot and the p4.output file (or simply p4 info command output ) to check the settings

all setting set and correct, verified against p4 info. Not using p4config. It seems isolated to the test connection button, because when I develop in idea, i can annotate, see revision history, update, check out stuff. Though occasionally the changes commit will fail.
Problem reoccurs consistently through dialog box opening.
Not sure what you mean about the client, I have the Use native Perforce API checked.

Another point of interest, I have a new workstation, no idea install, and when I installed it + enabled perforce, everything seems to work, including the test button. The old machine (which I still have) was an upgrade from 5.0.
