When you type a Ä (\u00c4) in the plain text editor of IDEA you can't see a difference between the capital A without dots and the umlaut with the dots on the top. This sees to be related to line spacing. The dots appear if you move the cursor one line up. Workaround: set the line spacing to 1.1 instead of 1.0
