I have added a few files that do not have any extension to the "text files" file type.
That is, the pattern for the file "theFile" was just "theFile", without wildcards.
Then, it is not possible to remove this item from File Types, after re-opening the item is back. It does not say that a page was modified, either.
Also, IDEA could suggest adding not the pattern like "theFile", but "*."
