I've already got an open request for a "Close all but pinned" action, which I think would be cleaner than multiple pinning modes.

NNTP User - 30 May 05 17:25

I had one like that too, that was wrongly tagged as duplicate:
http://www.intellij.net/tracker/idea/viewSCR?publicId=5557#591393

Note 1:
------
, but this request is a little richer, as it offers 3 levels of resistance
(1) : no resistance to closing
(2) : resistance to auto-closing (when reaching the tab limit)
(3) : resistance to manual AllBut closing.

(3) is useful when you keep your todo list in a text file, that you wish
to keep open all the time (=> never close it))
(2) is useful to protect the class(es) on which you are actively working
from be auto-closed by IDEA.

Note 2:
------
Your request could be usefully extended with double keypress detection:

  • press Ctrl-Shift-F4
=> close all but the pinned editors
  • press Ctrl-Shift-F4 a second time, directly
=> close all but the current editor
