I suggest adding a "Defaults" item to the list of run configurations. I think the "Edit Defaults" button is not as discoverable as an item in the list itself would be. The Defaults item could be italic to show its significance, and a message could be shown at the top of the configuration saying "These settings will be used for new run configurations created here and through the editor right-click menu." or something that sounds nicer.
