Do I understand correctly that the only thing they currently provide is the possibility to resize the preview window to the size of the iPhone screen and to add a nice background picture around that?

Sanjiv Jivan - 29 Jun 07 15:15
That's what they seem to provide currently but plan on adding

-Export wizard for bundling and deploying iPhone applications and
-Integrated content assist for iPhone-specific APIs

Also I'm not sure if the preview functionality uses an embedded Safari browser?

An iPhone Facet in IDEA what supports the above iPhone features alsong with a "sample project" like the GWT Facet would be quite helpful.

I wonder how building and deploying an iPhone specific application differs from building and deploying any other app?

As for iPhone-specific APIs, I think they can be supported with our regular HTML/CSS/JavaScript plugin infrastructure without requiring a new plugin. (Has Apple published any documentation on these APIs?)

I think I got a little carried away. You might very well be correct in that no additional features may be required in IDEA for providing a rich dev environment for iPhone. There's not much info on the deployment (could be a matter of just placing html / js .css files in a folder) or thier API to access features like makign a call or sending email.

The iPhone shipds today so I suppose this issue can be a placeholder for now until more info is available.

Here are further details : http://blogs.zdnet.com/Burnette/?p=333

"Telephone-specific urls will, for example, allow the user to click on a link and make a phone call. These include "sms:", "tel:", and "mailto:". In some cases it appears special links are not really necessary. One source says that if a phone number appears anywhere on a web page Safari will automatically recognize it and make it clickable, just like browsers on some other phones."

So it appears that iPhone support really comes down to having a preview window with the iPhone screen resolution and background, which would be quite useful.

Also a "sample app" would be useful for marketting purposes.
