Another suggestion to remove clutter from the To-do Explorer...
When a not is expanded, hide the node count message. Even though it's lightened, it creates extra noise on the control.
As a general usability guideline, the number of different fonts, colours and styles should be minimised to help convey maximum information within the space.
In this case, the "(1 item)" label adds no value, and distracts my eye by eating up the whitespace and standing out because of the different colour and italics. Italics are usually used for emphasis.
